Speaking about comments - How to turn off google+ comment option on blogger

Don't get me wrong, I like Google... but sometimes the things they do annoy me.  There is the whole google+ sometimes turns you into a no reply blogger thing. Don't worry I created a tutorial for that if you are in the situation. Then this whole getting rid of Google reader... not happy about that either. And now google+ comments.

They made it sound so great. Combine your blog comments with your google+ comments and have them all in one place. So of course I made the switch.

However it got really quite around here. My page hits were fine, but the comments were nonexistent. So clicked to see what these new comments looked like. They look cool enough until you try to add a comment.  It turns out that in order to comment you have have a google+ account. I mean its right there in the FAQ.. that of course I didn't read all the way through.

OK So that is bad and explains a lot. I don't want to force people to have a google+ account just to say hey I like your quilt or oh look at those adorable GSDs or just to say hey, but some people must already have google+ accounts, so why am I still not hearing anything for anyone.

It turns out there is another catch. If the person who's commenting has their Google+ set to private or only family or whatever and your aren't in their circle you can't see what post.

So people can post on my blog... but I can't see it... Hmm that doesn't make my blog very interactive. My fault again that was right in the about section. I should really read things through before deciding to change to the new Google+ products.

After figuring out all of this I thought they must tell you how to revert back to blogger comments. Well, If they do I can't find it. After searching for a long bit and it not being where I would have guessed I finally figured it out. Since this took me forever to figure out and I have a feeling others like me may have thought "cool combining comments", I decided to share how to turn off Google+ Comments on blogger. I promise it is much simpler than you would thing, but there is a little trick. Oh yeah and this tutorial is only for those who have made to switch to a google+ profile, because if you are still a blogger profile don't have the option for google+ comments until you make the switch.

First sign into your blog from the dashboard and then look to the left options under my blogs.  Now I know you would think that the comment option is under settings - post and comments, but it is not, so don't even look there. The google+ comments is under the Google+.

Once you click Google+ you end up on a page with your picture and two little check boxes plus a whole bunch of google+ info. This is your Google+ setting page. If you are still on a blogger profile you wouldn't have this page.

To get rid of the Google+ comments unchecked the second box. That is it. Now you are back to blogger comments and you can control those by going to settings - post and comments.

Told you it was easy. That is if you know where to look. If not your could spend say a half hour to an hour of your time trying to figure out how to revert back to a good thing where people can have a conversation with the blog writing with out having to choose to share publicly under google+, which I have no idea how to do unless you share everything publicly.

Ok enough with my rant- have a great day. I hope this helps out someone else in the same situation as I was.

DISCLAIMER - When I did this all my old comments stayed. However, I was just told by someone (01/10/14) that their comments went away. This has been confirmed by others too. So follow these directions at your own risk. The comments may stay or they may go... that is all on google. You just have to decide if the google+ comments section is right for you or not.

  1. I hate Google+ with a vengeance. It's so annoying! Thankfully I managed to stay as far away from it as possible so far. After having it on my profile once and then repeatedly getting stuff emailed that people shared with me because they added me to their circles even though I didn't have them in mine. Then I changed the whole email settings to no emails being received and I still got them lol!

Also, I agree, it's so annoying that Google scrapes one good thing after the other. First GFC, now Google Reader.
I don't like when they force you to change to other applications or programs.

It's basically the same with MSN turning into Skype. Just as bad!

  2. I'm getting sick of Google in general. They've made everything so complicated and now the GFC thing is going away. I'm ready to switch to something simple and non Google!

  6. I know this is an older post for you, but hoping you see this... I don't have my blog linked to Google+ but I have the same problem with the comments & I can't seem to be able to fix it. For a shiny-new blog to not get comments just b/c of the Google+ committment is BAAAAAAD! :( I've had people email me saying they would have left a comment except for this.... Any ideas?

  7. I've lost the ability to reply to comments - you know, Blogger's big threaded comment roll out? Had it and now its gone and not sure how to get it to appear back on my blog again. Any suggestions?

    1. I am sorry to hear that. I am sure much has changed since I wrote this in 2013. It seems to be a common theme that some if not all the comments are going away when you make the switch. Thanks for letting everyone one know so they can make an informed decision.

    2. Yes you are correct. Something surely changed. I recently gone through google help as well regarding this google plus comment. They mentioned that once you disable this your google plus comment will not appear here...:-( if I read it earlier....:-) .
Any ways... thanks for your posts.. these are helpful and interesting also.

  62. I wish I had known when I enabled Google+ comments what I know now.

I'm in the process of migrating my blog to WordPress and it turns out I can take all the comments that were made before G+ comments but none of the comments made with G+.
