Good Bye 2013

Another year is coming to an end, which of course means time for reflection.

Good-bye 2013

This year has been my least creative since I have started this blog. Mostly because I ended up taking a few months off from creating.

Going back into the classroom took more out of me then I would have thought it could have. It used up much of my creative energy (well most of my energy in general) It is so strange what one year off can do. It was like I was out of the flow of teaching. However, I am feeling much more confident again. So much so that I decided to take on a student teacher starting in the new year.

Getting my workout with the teacher's version of a stair master. And yes my ABC line was two sections to short of fitting, so I am redoing that!

That was one factor in the break, the other is that I started an administrative program. I am loving the program, but it does take up every other Saturday. Which was often my catch up on projects times. Saturday mornings were a great time for quilting/sewing for me because my husband plays hockey the night before and always sleeps in. The admin program being on Saturday also means I can not attend the Sacramento Modern Quilt guild meetings. I guess I didn't realize how much they inspired me to finish my projects.

So without further ado here is what I have accomplished this year.

First up Quilting:
Quilting 2013

And a little bit (very very little bit) of sewing too:

Sewing 2013

When I look at my UFOs for last year you can see I barely made a dent.

Projects 2013-finished noted

And my un-started projects... lets not even go there.

However, I did have some awesome things happen this year. We went to Hawaii to watch my sister-in-law get married and made a vacation out of it. I figured out that I wanted to go in to school administration and got into an amazing program. My dad had a quadruple bypass and is recovering well. I went to Texas to visit my nephew, brother and sis-in-law. Learned some new makeup and hair techniques. My husband got he position/promotion that he wanted at his work. Spent lots of time with family. Realized I was allergic to gluten and by not eating all my health problems magically faded away. Best of all my husband and I celebrated our 5 year of marriage/ 12 year together anniversary.

Even with all the ups and downs, 2013 has turned out to be a rather good year. I am looking forward to 2014 being even better.

One last finish for 2013

My final finish for 2013 is High Five for Jaden.

High Five for Jaden

This is a very special quilt that I made for a friend's/co-worker's son who had a terrible accident. Her son, Jaden, had a bookcase fall on him and he was in a coma for a little while. Then when he woke up they were not sure if he would ever be the same.  Thank goodness he is recovering so well and is very much back to being a normal 5 year old little boy. Much more than they had ever expected.

High Five for Jaden

It just happened that this accident happened right before my month for the Sunday Morning Quilt bee. I used the opportunity to request high five blocks from the Sunday Morning Quilts book in boy colors. One of the ladies suggested fussy cutting boy type things for the centers.

I have to say this quilt turned out to one of the most unique quilts I have ever put together. All the dinosaurs, trains, superman, cats, fish, rockets, and you name it made this quilt amazing. The ladies all did such a great job and I couldn't have put this quilt together with out their help and there is no way it would have been so varied and scrappy if I had just used my own stash.

High Five for Jaden

However, the best feeling was giving the quilt to Amber. I have known/worked with Amber since my first year teaching (her second year). We both started same school site and years later ended up at a different site together again. She is a great person and I am so glad that I could give this special gift to her and her family. I know Jaden will enjoy this quilt and I am glad I was able to get it to him before Christmas.

High Five Work in Progress

I made a lot of progress on my high five quilt this week. I took it from a quilt top to a quilted quilt all in one afternoon. Which is quite an accomplishment seeing as this thing is 54" X 90".

We had a bit of a wrestling match on my little janome, but in the end I conquered this lovely quilt.

High Five Top

I even started binding yesterday. I am hoping to finish today and get it to its new owner tomorrow, but we will see how that goes.

All I know is the more I work with it the more enjoyment I get out of all the prints that are included in it. I am so glad that I had my Sunday Morning Bee mates help me out in making these blocks. There is so much variety and I a really enjoy that.

Progress on High Five

It has been so nice to be back to sewing again. I have been making a lot of progress on my High Five quilt.

Just finished my high five #quilt top. Thanks to my Sunday Morning Quilt bee mates who made all the blocks.

This quilt is made by the help of my Sunday Morning Quilts bee. In the bee we used the patterns from Sunday Morning Quilts Book. I picked high five for mine and I am loving the way it turned out. I can't wait to get it quilted. I am thinking loop-de-loos.

In other notes, it is official I am a reading glasses kind of gal. It has always been a you don't need them but it would help kind of thing but you can get them if you want them. Well since reading my teaching manuals and articles for my class was getting to be difficult, I decided to get them.

It is official I finally got reading glasses. It has always been a you don't need them but they would help kind of thing. However reading my teacher's manuals was becoming an issue so I caved. It is amazing how much easier it is to read when the words are

An added bonus is that a quarter inch is huge now, which means my seams are matching up so much easier.

See the reading glasses did help.

Such pretty seams and the best part is that most of them for the whole quilt top ended up that way. Which is kind of hard when you are putting together blocks made from  lots of people, because we all know each machine and each person has their own quarter inch.

I'm sewing again

I am finally back to sewing after a way too long break. It feels good to have worked in my sewing room twice already this week. I started working on my high five blocks from Sunday Morning Quilts
for a very special quilt. I would love to tell you more about this quilt but it is special surprise.

High Five  blocks

I really want to have this quilt done by a couple days before Christmas. So lets cross our fingers that I can keep up my progress. Luckily I am working on the last block because this quilt is made of blocks from by the Sunday Morning Quilt bee that I was in.

It's been a long time, but I am working in my sewing room again.

However, before I could work on anything I had to clean my sewing room.

Before/After of my swing room

It feels so much nicer having a clean sewing room. Now I just don't open the door and turn around. Let's see how long the clean room lasts. :)

BTW... after taking a few months break from sewing, I had forgotten how hard it is to sew a 1/4 inch seam... Now, that is going to take a bit of practice.

Gray Jungle Bungle

This is a super cute quilt for a colleague. Well actually a colleagues soon to be first grandchild.

Jungle Bungle Repeat

While I was the student learning coach, Kathy and I worked closely together as we trained the staff on our new curriculum. Of course working closely together means you learn lots about that person. Kathy learned that I quilted. So of course when she found out she was going to be a grandma, she requested a commissioned quilt.

Jungle Bungle Repeat

She said that the nursery was going to be gray and yellow and the mom loved elephants. So of course I had to show her jungle bungle and once she saw my original jungle bungle quilt she wanted a repeat. Normally, I don't do repeats. However. I made an exception and I am glad I did.

Jungle Bungle Repeat

Kathy was so happy with the quilt. That of course made me happy. The new momma and daddy were happy.. So all around happiness is a good thing.

Jungle Bungle Repeat

I actually finished this quilt right before school started up again. I just haven't really felt like posting. I know.. I know... slacker :) I wish I could say, that I am getting back into the flow of things and that I will be back to quilting and blogging... but we will see.

Total slacker

So these last few months not only have a been a total slacker on the whole blogging front, but I have also been a total slacker on the whole quilting thing. If you missed the picture of my craft room from my post yesterday, here is the disaster I have created with my oh so busy life and my total slacking.

Craft room exploded

If we take a closer look you can see I did accomplish a few things. I finished two bee blocks late both for my Sunday Morning Quilt bee.

Sunday Morning Quilt Bee

The first was giant. It was ok, but it just showed me no matter how cute I think ticker tape quilts are I will never be making one for myself.

Sunday Morning Quilt Bee

The second one, she asked for blues and yellows... These were the only ones I could find in my stash. I finished this one on time, but it is still sitting in my pile to mail.

To be mailed

Yes all of this is a month or more late into the mail. Some of those are fat quarters I owe for a swap I was in.

Plus I still need to finish one more block for that bee. Naughty bee mate that I am.

Sunday Morning Quilt Bee

Oh and I totally didn't tell you all that I won a silhouette, seriously how could I not share such exciting news as that.

I also finished a commissioned quilt. I will share more about that later. I think this is enough for now. I am hoping that admitting I have had a problem will be the first step to solving it, because if I don't start quilting again, I will continue to be stressed and I will never finish the million and one projects I have.

Been a bit busy

OK, lets just start with yes I am still around. Have you noticed me missing? Wouldn't blame you if you didn't. I know I wouldn't have missed anyone these last couple months. Ever since Google reader went away I just haven't really been reading blogs. Thanks to everyone who kept stopping by while I was gone, I appreciate the traffic and it part of the reason I am coming back to write again.

So you maybe wondering why so busy. Well lets just take a picture walk. I think my craft room says it all. Now you may want to look away, but lets be real here.

Craft room exploded

Now you are probably thinking what the blank happened there.  Well that is called craziness of life and laziness of closing off a room and ignoring it. Well that is unless you count dumping more of the last 3 months of your life in to it.

So, let's take a closer look at some of the most important items and what they are all about.

Teachers Helper

Well first and forth most I went back into the classroom this year. I went right back to 4th grade. However, it has been a rough come back so far. I wouldn't think one year out of the classroom would cause such a disruption to routine, but my goodness, how did I get everything done. One little year as a student learning coach rather than a classroom teacher and I am lost. How does that happen.

Love and Logic

I am trying to use love and logic, but some days are much harder than others. This group is an interesting one, so many nice kids, but the talking.... Oh my gosh the talking. And the roaming the room... really who just gets up and walks around the room in the middle of a lesson. Oh yeah the about 1/3 of the class with some form of ADHD and ADD. Sometimes I feel like there are a bunch of prairie dogs in my room (pop up, look around, tap, talk a bit, duck back down... repeat)... Phew, what a trying day that leads too.

Leadership Institute

Another big change for me is I got accepted to the SCOE Leadership Institute. I am working on my administrative credential. Just one year on the other side of the fence and I decided that I liked it. I liked working with teachers and helping out students, so I decided to get my administrative credential and work on becoming a principal. I have finished my first class and I am loving it.

Oh and here is some work in progress from when my dad had open heart surgery. It ended up being a quadruple bypass. That took like a week out of my life. Well more than that. There of course was the lead up to it. It was super crazy. He is doing well, making progress, but that was a pretty scary time.  My mom was pretty strong throughout the whole scary thing and of course when my dad comes out of it he tells me that he was glad I was there for my mom. Never thinking of himself. I am just glad he is recovering, I wish he would make some lifestyle changes, but we all know how hard that is.

So that is why I have been so busy... Crazy times that have caused me to be so busy that I had some real slacking issues on the whole quilting front. Come back tomorrow and see what I have actually accomplished... well sort of...
