Year end Wrap Up

Happy New Years Eve!

Since it is the last day of the year, I guess it is time to reflex at all that I have accomplished. I started this blog almost a year ago and posted my new years resolutions.
Resolutions 2011

Last year set a timer and create was one of my resolutions and I can't believe I actually accomplished a resolution. Actually, believe it or not, I accomplished a few. Choose Happiness (check), create (check), relax (check, I did go on a cruise after all)... the rest... well sorta. I did really well on the exercising for a couple months. The budget thing.. hmm, just don't even ask my husband about that one. Neat and tidy, still working on that. I definitively need to work on simplifying more. I think I may need to some of those to next years resolutions. This was the first time I had set resolutions in a long time and I am glad I did. Even if I only accomplished a few and made progress towards the others.

Since this is my sometimes creative life, lets look at the create part.

Photos taken this year = over 3,000. Not all of them great, but my skills are improving.

Crafts = 1 project, and a last minute one at that. I made this for my mother-in-law. It was a label purchased from sweetwater on etsy and then I added the embellishments and frame and such.

Sewing Projects = 6, I am really proud to have sewing my first bag, with my mom's help. Then I did three more bags on my own.

Sewing 2011

Quilting Projects = 13. 2 baby quilts, 2 lap quilts, a table runner, a mini quilt, and 6 mugs rugs. I know mug rugs are little but at least they are complete :)

Quilts 20111

Bee blocks: At least 33, I am sure there were more, but I wasn't good about organizing my pictures.

Bee Blocks 2011

That was a pretty creative year for me. Had I not started blogging, I don't think I would have accomplished this much.

Thanks to all my readers, comment makers, SMQG members, fellow bloggers, fellow pinners, flickr contacts, family and friends for following along and helping motivate me. I really enjoy being part of this online community and I am so glad I decided to join. I am looking forward to see what the new year brings. I hope you had a wonderful year and I wish you a happy new year.

My Blogger's Choice Fat Quarter Bundle Picks

Now I am sure by now you all know I love a good challenge... Ok.. Fine.

The truth is I just love shopping and the chance to win what I have been shopping for is too much for me to pass up. So a little shopping and a little playing later I came up with this Fat Quarter Bundle.

Now, why would I spend so much time doing such a silly thing. Well, over at Ouokka Quilts there is this little challenge going on to create your own blogger's choice fat quarter bundle for fat quarter shop. Now here is the best part if you win, you get a whole yard of each of your fabric choices. So go on, create your own bundle and link up to join in on the challenge.

Merry Holidays

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all.

I promise this post is about quilting, but I need a moment to explain my thinking. See, in teaching we have this theory called ZPD, zone of proximal development. Long story short it is a theory that Vygotsky came up with, that basically has to do with what child can do by themselves and what they can do with help/practice. So let's think of it this way, if a child can ride a tricycle, then with a bit of help and a bit of practice the child can ride a bike, but don't expect that said child to be able to ride a motor cycle.

Now you are probably thinking by now, what does this have to do with quilting/crafting/you know the things you usually write about?

Well, here it is I have a sort of finish. I finished the Kaleidoscope quilt alongtop.  After much frustration, it is pieced together, and I have come to the conclusion that the skills necessary to complete this task correctly are out of my quilting ZPD.

I have a pretty good set of quilting skills, I would even say I am probably in the intermediate range. However, this task, well I need some more quilting practice before I try anything like it again. The directions were well written, the task was straight forward. My skills were just not to par, but the top is done now and I just have to quilt it.

Now on to some things that are closer to my ability level (right in that ZPD) some were a bit harder than others, but I have a whole set of mug rugs for my husband's office mates.

mug rugs 1

I really hope they like them, I still need to work on my machine binding skills, but I am pretty proud of each of these little mini quilts.

Mug rug 2

All I know is next time I decided to try a pattern, I will take the time to think to myself, is this too easy or too hard. I don't want quilting to not be fun and either of those situations have the same effect. Frustration with myself.

FNSI Recap and another winner

I finished exactly one thing during Friday Night Sew In. As always I didn't get started as soon as I had hoped to, but I did finish the most important thing. I finished my swap project for the Sacramento Modern Quilt Guild

This mug rug as really fun to make. It is just string piecing along with a cute little owl appliqueing. Now I only have oh I don't know 3 more mug rugs to go.

Now, on to the fun point. A winner from the Blog Hop Party

Sugar Cookies - We meet again

Yesterday, I got the nicest gift from my secret Santa at work. I should have taken a picture of it, but that would have taken forethought. So instead let me give you a mental picture.

My secret Santa present included: Christmas cookie cutters, Christmas oven mitts, a Christmas towel, snowman spatulas, a holiday colored whisk, sugar cookie dough, and frosting. All of this was neatly placed inside a  large red mixing bowl, which I place on my desk so my students could oh and oh over and I could taunt them with the thought of cookies. All the time knowing that there was no way I was making myself the cookies and that I would bake the cookies for them and bring the cookies in on our last day before winter break. Not that I would ever have lead them suspect something like that. So for two days they stared at the cookies and lovely cookie making tools. All the while thinking that I was such an evil teacher and would eat them all myself. I even over heard one little girl tell the next to her boy, who just happened to be absent when the present arrived, "they aren't for us" with longing in her voice.

So, I came home this evening and I made sugar cookies.

No, I did not invite a 5 year old over to bake sugar cookies. Sugar cookies and have been arch-nemesis for a long time. My mom and I used to try and make them. They just turned out like rocks or burnt or just not right. I have even tried many, let's repeat that, many times since I "grew up". Last time, the sugar cookies turned out like sugar lace cookies - flat as pancakes... no even flatter. So I thought, a package this will work. I mean who can mess up a package of cookies...

Ummm, yeah that would be me. After over an hour of making, 20 minute cookies... a bit of yelling, maybe a bit of swearing and a bunch I hate sugar cookies! They are made. Hopefully my student like the thought... At least they aren't burnt. Plus I did get each student a pair of gloves and a candy cane. So that should make it just a little bit better.

Next time it is back to chocolate chip cookies or cupcakes... Those I can handle.

Sew Mama Sew Giveaway

If you are visiting from Sew Mama Sew, welcome. If you are a regular or new follower, it is another exciting blog hop giveaway! After all 'tis the season for giving.

This time it was little hard for me to pick some thing to giveaway. I thought about stopping by my local quilt store, but just didn't have time. So, I went shopping in my stash. In this in case my precuts box.. And looky what I found. One Soiree charm pack by Lila Tueller for Moda. This one was bought because I thought it would make a sweet little girls quilt. I still think it would, but as I have no little girls to make something like that for, I am going to share it with you all. That is instead of hording it, like I have been for a couple years, but it super cute and I hope someone can make something wonderful from it.

If you are new here, you could check out my about me page, but the basic information is that I am a 4th grade teacher, who owns two wonderful German Shepherd Dogs and I am the current leader of the Sacramento Modern Quilt guild. Well, since I am a teacher, I often need some stress relief from my daily job. So, sometimes I try to be creative, and that is what this blog is all about. Normally my crafting is quilting, but sometimes it is sewing and other times it is food, gardening, photography or some other random crafty type thing.

Here are some examples of what I have created. To see more: look at my completed quilts page or my sewing page. I even have a couple tutorials and will be adding an new one soon.

Busy Quilting

And somethings I am working on.

So I wanted to share some of my favorites from the blog hopping I did today. And I know not everyone has the time to click click click. But if you do, it is a blast and just click the the big button below.

BeaQuilter is giving away a copy of EQ 7.

Fat Quarterly is giving away a cd of all their issues but you have to enter on Facebook

Fabric and Quilts is giving away a random bunch of stuff. This link is because they are sweet people and I have had nothing but good experience with them.

There was more but I forgot to come back and link them here. There was even one person with yards of fabric and like 5 rulers all to giveaway. Too bad I didn't note down that one.

FNSI Recap

Like always I did not accomplish what I wanted to. That could have a lot to do with the fact that the internet distracted me and so did that bowl of ice cream, that one that I really shouldn't of eaten. So the question is what did I do for Friday Night Sew in.

Handmade by Heidi

Well, lets have a moment of reality. I am tired, it has been a long week and there are only 4.5 more school days before winter break and my darling little 4th grade class is on the wild side. So before I did something silly, like sew a finger or burn myself I decided to leave my sewing room, and I am going to bed as soon as I am done writing this.

So here is where I left off after this weeks FNSI.  I left my sewing room with two yes, two, part way done rug mugs.

See that one even still has the pins in it and this one still needs batting and backing and such!

You would think I would have just finished one of them, but I really didn't feel like quilting it plus for some strange reason I couldn't remember how to make a mitered corner.(As I said, really tired). Finally, after a break I figured it out, as you can see in the picture above.

If you so desire you could jump on over to the Friday Night Sew in page and hop around and see what other have been up to. There right now 156 people who signed up to join.

Speaking of joining, I joined the blog hop party giveaway. Check out my last post to enter
